Choosing a Screwdriver

A screwdriver is an indispensable tool for a handyman to perform all common DIY works that involve screwing and unscrewing. The screwdriver should combine comfort and ease. You wish to acquire a screwdriver but do not know what to choose among the many existing models on the market? This article will guide you to find the screwdriver fits your needs and your budget.

Screwdriver models

There are two types of electric screwdrivers: the wireframe model and the wireless model. These two models differ in their ergonomics:

- The wireless screwdriver consists of a cylindrical block (engine block) and an hexagonal mandarin. Some models have a central axis allowing to create a handle and thus to keep the right wrist for a better user experience.

- Wired screwdriver looks like a drill including mandarin that adapts to different hexagonal screwdriver bits.

Some models that offer an option 'drilling' can accommodate several types of caps. The screwdriver, provided with an inverter, allows you to both screw and unscrew. It differs from the drill in terms of power (400 to 500 watts) and rotational speed (3000 to 4000 rpm).

The screwdriver choice

Before buying your screwdriver, it is important to consider several factors:

- The autonomy of a screwdriver is a function of battery voltage and amperage. The battery components (NiMH, NiCd and Lith) are also quality criteria for its life. its ability and speed to load are also taken into account. Mechanically, the machine will be more accurate with a setting of torque.

- Torque: it is the combination of a force exerted on a lever arm. Its measurement unit is the Newton/meter (Nm). The higher the torque, the greater the rotation force will be high. The more a machine includes positions of torque adjustment, more the screw is accurate. The torque setting allows to adjust the screwing according to the selected screws and the backing material.

- Power: do not confuse the device power (its engine, about 400-500 watts) with the battery power (between 9.6 and 18 volts). They are respectively given in watts and volts.

- Spindle lock: the shaft locking allows to use the screwdriver as if it were a manual screwdriver.

- The rotation speed: it is lower than of a drill: 3000 to 4000 rev/min to properly tighten the screws. Pick a model with two speed ranges and having a drive. the latter improves the accuracy of bolts: fast for wood, medium slow for metal or concrete.

A screwdriver remains a dangerous tool for you, but also for your environment. It is therefore essential, in terms of security, to have a minimum of experience. It is important to know the right thing to not get hurt.

Screwdriver brands: Black & Decker, Bosch, Panasonic, Makita, Hitachi...
