Choose a Vacuum Cleaner

Indispensable for cleaning carpets, rugs and floors, vacuum is present in almost every home. And yet, between the types of vacuums (sled, compact, robots...) and technologies (with or without bag, central vacuum), it is not easy to choose this appliance.

The canister vacuums: they represent 98 % of the market (two thirds with bag and one third without bag). All are similar: a suction head connected by a long flexible to a body with nozzle on casters. Air is sucked into a bag and through one or more filters before being discharged. Some models replace the bag with a reservoir empty or filled with water. Despite these similarities, the simplicity of use and the suction quality vary considerably from one model to another... the price too. Although vendors will tout their merits, forget the engine power and airflow. In fact, the quality of a vacuum depends primarily on its useful or returned power (but it is rarely indicated by the manufacturer) and the design of suction head. Triangular or rectangular, the shapes matter little. Make sure above all that the grooves are not too large and that the bristles are present on all four sides of the brush so you do not lose suction power.

Compact vacuum: for a small area or one-story house, a compact model (5 kg), possibly with a shoulder strap is preferable despite a lower tank capacity.

The canisters "eco": they show less power and consume less electricity than conventional ones, but are quite effective.

Cans vacuum: they absorb water, ash and small rubble, very versatile, they fit both at home and garage. They represent 1 % of the market.

Brushes vacuum cleaners: reserved for small areas, they also come in rechargeable version, wireless and often without a bag.

Robot vacuums: Do not have to vacuum, what happiness! Funny the little machines promise you. But they are expensive and their performance is unsatisfactory.

With or without a bag?

No offense to "antisac" growing number, our tests prove year after year that conventional models aspire better. And, regardless of the soil type in which they are struggling (tile, carpet, parquet) or dirt they face (crumbs, dust, pet hair...). They are also more hygienic. Indeed, once full, a bag - which clogs upon withdrawal - just to be thrown, when a tank needs to be cleaned, exposing the user to inhale the dust. An argument in which allergic will surely sensitive... And if at a few dollars of replacement bags per year, traditional vacuums can seem more expensive to use, in fact their main fault lies elsewhere. It lies in the multitude of available bags references. So, please note that of your model in your diary; at the time to renew your stock, you save the doubt that embraces all consumers face linear...

Filters and allergies

Filtering quality also plays an important role. Now, with some vacuums, the sucked particles remain retained in the bag, even the smallest and most allergens. An improvement which originates generalization of cloth bags and filters "high filtration" Hepa Type (High Efficiency Particulate Air). On vacuum cleaners, there are several types (H12: minimum filtration efficiency of 99.5%; H13: 99.95% and finally H14: 99.995%). But beware, the vacuum does not necessarily guarantee a high filtration efficiency of their Hepa filter because dust may emerge from other places (clearance between the plastic parts, for example). Remember that you can also contact dust during vaccum maintenance operations. This is particularly the case when draining the tank on bagless vacuum cleaners.

Details that count

Often plastic, the hose is sometimes equipped with metal rings that make it stronger but increase the price. As the rigid tube, it is lighter in plastic but stronger in aluminum or chromed steel. Most often telescopic to adapt to the user size, it can also consist of two interlocking parts. Check the number and quality of accessories: small nozzle (for curtains and cushions), the large nozzle (for baseboards or radiators) and brush for upholstery are essential. Housing or tube attachment system are very useful to avoid having to look for accessories when you need them. Side of the coin, they can get when you work, some users prefer to store them under the hood.

Maneuverability

Users also aspire to greater maneuverability. At the time of purchase, do not hesitate to open the lid to judge whether the replacement of bags is easy and check maintenance recommendations. Some devices require indeed a tank drain or cleaning the filter after each use. The sled must be handy, have a power inverter and a hose connection to the body of the orientable device 360°. Controls, to the handle or foot, should be simple to use. Finally, if the device is equipped with a rubber on the perimeter, it will protect the furniture and doors - and will also be protected - when you move.
